2017 Outings for CFF Members
The 2017 is an exciting year for the CFF outing schedule. We already have several of our favorite fishing spots lined up with CFF’s genial outing hosts. Many of our dates are coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife trout stocking schedule so the catching, at least theoretically, is more probable and a little easier.
At each of our meetings there will be a sign-up sheet for upcoming outings. We have a variety of day and overnight trips.
We also meet some evenings for fun, fishing, and company. Times, days of the week, locations, etc., will be determined by those who express an interest.
Due to liability constraints,CFF sponsored outings are for CFF members only, but our $25 dues are well worth the cost for membership. Come join Cascade Family Fly Fishers.
Thurs – Sun, July 13 – 16 East Lake Frank and Katherine Paiva
High in the caldera of a dormant volcano, East Lake is one of the most beautiful areas in Central Oregon to fish. Large brown trout, rainbow, and kokanee are abundant, and CFF members do our best to get them attracted to our flies. Our hosts for East Lake are Katherine and Frank Paiva. Set aside Thursday thru Sunday, July 13, 14, 15, and 16th for this outing. Be advised campgrounds, including RV sites, outside of East Lake Lodge are only open Friday and Saturday this summer. Hazardous trees are being removed. Now the RV Park at East Lake is accepting reservations & are allowing us to “bunk up” on the available sites.
Fri – Sun, Sept 22-24 Blitzen River John Higby
The Blitzen River outing near the Steens Mountain and south of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, is a wonderful adventure for those who like fishing small streams with good sized fish. The river is 50 feet wide and generally 3 feet deep, making wading and fishing enjoyable. The wild and scenic river is catch-and-release only, with the average wild fish 12- 15 inches. The area is full of history, including the name “Donner und Blitzen” which is German for thunder and lightning. With hiking trails, bird watching can complement the fishing done by family members. Our outing host, John Higby, who is familiar with this river, has offered to share his expertise with CFF members. This is a new outing for our club, so be sure to join the fun September 22- 14.
Fri – Sun, Oct 6 – 8 Diamond Lake Marv Clemons
Diamond Lake outing is always a grand adventure for those participating. Set high in the Umpqua National Forest, this beautiful lake is ideal for fishing with views of Mt Bailey and Mt Thielsen. Marv Clemons, this outing host, has lots of experience fishing this lake over the years and readily shares his expertise. The Diamond Lake Lodge offers amenities that make this trip a delight. Be sure to get your reservations early as rooms fill quickly. Mark the dates of Fri through Sunday, October 6-8th .
October 2017 Dates TBD Crooked River Fred and Jen Acosta
The Crooked River Outing is bound to be an excellent fishing hot spot. The Crooked River is a clear-running, cold-water stream after it is released from Prineville Reservoir at Bowman Dam. Fly fishing for trout is outstanding with biologists counting 4,600 red band trout 8 inches or larger per mile in a 12-mile stretch below the dam. The river runs with a gentle current, without any large rapids. This is bank fishing at its best, and Jen and Fred are planning on a cheerful time with wine, appetizers & campfire Friday night after fishing. Good Friends, Good Fishing, Good Times! Be sure to set this time aside to join the group.
Past 2017 CFF Outings
Sat, April 8 Horton Pond Glen Neal, Bill Burleigh
Horton Pond Outing, one of our favorite local sites, is already in the works. Our master dutch oven chefs Glen Neal and Bill Burleigh again are willing to be our hosts. Even if the weather or the fish don’t cooperate, those scrumptious desserts and CFF camaraderie make this a memorable outing for our entire CFF group. Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 8, 2017.
Sat, May 20 North Twin Bob Wolfe
For those busy families, Bob Wolfe is hosting a one day outing to the North Twin Lake. The beautiful lake was formed from a crater that filled with ground water, set in the Deschutes forest area. The lake is just 2 .25 hours away, stocked with trophy rainbow trout, and is a great place to fly fish for all fishing levels. Bob is an excellent host, sharing his fishing experience with all. Come join the fun. This is one outing you won’t want to miss.
Thursday, June 1 Carmen Reservoir Rod Roth
Our Carmen Reservoir outing is a one day fishing trip at the uppermost diversion reservoir used by EWEB for power production. The water, the McKenzie River just a few miles from Clear Lake, is exceptionally clear and cold, ranging in depths of 4 to 18 feet. The reservoir is well stocked, and our host, Rod Roth, has planned this outing to coincide with the release of 3000 trout. Be sure to join us for this great fishing day adventure. Mark Thursday, June 1st on your calendar.
Friday, June 23 – Saturday, June 24 Gold Lake Glenn Miller
Gold Lake, situated in an alpine forest, is a new adventure for CFF members. This small lake is 100 acres, yet 25 feet deep, and holds many brook and rainbow trout. It is a fly fishing only lake, abounding with wildlife. This outing is hosted by Glenn Miller as a two day trip and there are many campgrounds for those who wish to stay both days.
